Yu Yan
Famous fashion media boss Yu Yan who five years ago set up Luxe.co, one of China's most influential luxury, fashion and lifestyle websites, recently shared her entrepreneurial story with fans.
When Yu quit her stable job at a foreign company in 2013 and chose to start a business alone, China's fashion industry was still in its infancy.
Yu found that, at that time, fashion media mostly just provided consumers with advice and introduced trend items, and financial media also reported very little about the fashion industry.
Yu was keenly aware that fashion as a rising industry was bound to attract more and more investors and entrepreneurs. However, there was a gap in the market for media and data services for this group.
"I didn't start a business for the sake of starting a business. I decided it was time when I found a significant gap in the market and I was a relatively fit person to fill it," said Yu.
Therefore, Yu set up Luxe.co, a media business on the cross-border of fashion, finance and technology with long-term accumulated resources and the professional characteristics.
As her understanding of the fashion industry deepened, Yu found that China, a large consumer power though, had few high-quality consumer brands known in the world.
Yu anticipated earlier than anyone else that China's fashion industry was about to see a flood of entrepreneurs.
In order to explore these initiatives and give them a better boost, Luxe.co started the National Fashion Industry Entrepreneurship Competition in 2015.
The same year, the Luxe.co Global Fashion Innovation and Investment Form was founded which witnessed and participated in the evolution of the fashion market and industry.
Yu releases the Global Fashion Innovation and Investment Trend Report at the Forum every year, which has become one of the most important products from Luxe.co.
Yu, who has been studying the evolution of the industry, saw that there was a strong passion for learning in the industry.
Therefore, Luxe.co combined business school education with cutting-edge entrepreneurial training in 2017, launching Orange Bay University to focus on the fashion and lifestyle industries.
Its students are mainly young entrepreneurs and young investors. Mentors are partners in venture capital and private equity.
Yu hopes the school will bring "new blood to the fashion industry in China and the world, and train professional fashion entrepreneurs and investors."
The fashion industry is often seen as more closely related to women, and Yu is often asked about women's advantages in the industry.
After contact with many of the entrepreneurs and investors, Yu summarized several female advantages: women are good at observing user demands through details and their introspection to innovate.
She admitted that her decision to start her own business by combining fashion and finance has also benefited from her sensitivity as a woman to the fashion industry.
Concerning women's entrepreneurial prowess, she mentioned two points. First, women should remain "true to your heart". Once they find the right direction, they should make products that are both to the delight of their own hearts and acceptable to the market.
Second, women should "think different". Female entrepreneurs should dare to be the first to establish their own "unfair advantage" and game rules based on highly differentiated thinking.
During the five years of entrepreneurship, Yu has maintained a clear judgment on the development path of Luxe.co. The ambition of her career comes from her conviction that she is creating value for the users.
So far, what she has been trying to do has consistently exceeded users' expectations.
