How to Sing with Your Friends in China?

Karaoke, or singing with a group of friends or colleagues, is extremely popular in China. Many of our Western friends are surprised when they hear this, and are even more surprised when they hear that Bryan and I enjoy it. Karaoke is not especially popular in most Western countries, so our friends ask us why it is so popular here.

Our explanation is that the Chinese tend to be modest, quiet and discreet in their work and social lives, and singing gives them a chance to loosen up and show off what they've got in front of their friends. Karaoke rooms can seat ten or more people, so it is a great venue for large groups, and everyone can have a drink, play dice or other games, and sing their favorite songs. Bryan likes to go to karaoke with business colleagues or venture partners to show that their relationship is more than just work, and also to let them see that he's got a few songs (but only a few) that he can really belt out.

Many of our Western friends reply that they would never want to sing in front of others because they would be too embarrassed. Interestingly, however, they would have no problem giving a presentation in front of an audience, or speaking up at a company meeting. Many Chinese, on the other hand, would be hesitant to speak in public, but wouldn't hesitate to sing karaoke in front of their friends. People express themselves in very different ways!
