There is a beloved teacher who spends his whole retire life helping students from poor families. Even today nothing can stop this old man's passion and selfless actions.

Born in 1935, Yang Hongzhang is a retired teacher of Beijing Wuzi University. In the past 20 years, together with students on campus, he has recycled many used textbooks and clothes. After being carefully packed and wrapped, all these books and clothes would then be sent to poverty-stricken students and residents in rural areas.

In June, 2000,Yang visited Gujiagou Primary School for the first time. The school was located in Wanquan County, Hebei province. Seeing the school in poor condition, he felt sad and was moved by the kids’ eagerness to learn. When he went back to Beijing, he called on eleven universities and some primary and middle schools to donate books for students in Wanquan County. Thanks to his efforts, over 30 thousand books were collected, sorted out and then delivered to several schools in Wanquan County. This donation helped to solve the problem of book shortage to some extent.

In 2003, Yang set up the “Donation Station” in Beijing Wuzi University, calling on graduates to donate their used goods before leaving the campus. With the strong support of all the departments and school clubs, graduates from Beijing Wuzi University have taken the donations as a campus culture and passed it on as a tradition. Now, the Donation Station is called “Room of Love” by students, where more and more used items have been turned into “treasures”.

The Donation Station has continuously offered its help and support to students living in poverty in Wanquan County. For instance, each year, students would donate their uniforms for military training. These clothes, after being thoroughly cleaned and sorted, were almost as good as new ones. When they were sent to Wanquan county, those kids receiving these “new clothes” couldn’t help jumping for joy. Apart from this, some computers in BWU which could not be used in work or study were also given them to practice typing. Yang tried all his best to help villagers and kids in Wanquan County and they appreciated their lovely Grandpa Yang for all that he had done.

“I will keep doing what I can for those in need until the last day of my life.” Yang said. No wonder he is regarded by those villagers and students he has helped as the true guardian in their life.
