Chinese Spirit: the Spirit of the Chinese Women's Volleyball Team

   The Chinese Women Volleyball team was founded in 1954, when the People’s Republic of China had just been established a few years. The Soviet Union and some European countries were world volleyball powers at that time.

Since 1960s, Asian volleyball teams started to rise. In 1976, a new women volleyball teams was founded and Yuan Weimin served as the coach. Under his guidance, in 1979 China won the Asian women's Volleyball Championship.

During the 1980s, Chinese Women Volleyball teams has jumped up, achieving five straight championships after the 3rd and the 4th Volleyball World Cup, the 9th and 10th FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship, and the most important, the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Game. That was the first time in Chinese history. At that time China was undergoing a tough period in its own national development. The achievements those Chinese volleyball players had made and their spirits were quite an encouragement for Chinese people to work hard and get out of the darkness.
