In the Village of Xiaogang in Anhui, student groups from local technical colleges are arriving on an educational visit to one of the places where China's reform movement began 40 years ago.

But back then most universities and colleges had been closed down by the upheavals of the Cultural Revolution.

So what has brought you here to Xiaogang? Why have you come?

It's the 40 Year anniversary of China's Reform and Opening up. We've come to the first village of the reform and opening up, to visit in person and learn about what happened.

And the difference in the 40 years is just huge, isn't it?

In 1970, there were only 48,000 people in higher education in China. Today the figure is 37 million. It's an astonishing turnaround. So how did China do it?
