Qixi Festival

If love between both sides can last for aye,
Why need they stay together night and day?

The Seventh day of the seventh lunar month

is Chinese Qixi Festival

Qixi originated from the legend of two stars facing each other from afar
the Cowherd (Altair) and the Weaver Girl (Vega)

Legend has it that the Weaver Girl grew tired of weaving colorful clouds for the sky

and secretly ventured to the human world and married the Cowherd

This act infuriated the Heavenly Emperor

From then on, the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl were separated by the Milky Way

only gazing at each other from a distance, shedding tears

Only on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month each year

can they meet and cross the Milky Way through the “Magpie Bridge” formed by magpies

During the festival,

girls would pair up to do needlework

test ingenuity by throwing needles

plead for skills by threading a needle

worship the Weaver Girl

float festive lanterns on the river

and plead with the Weaver Girl, Zhinü for wisdom and ingenuity

Therefore, Qixi Festival is also called “Qiqiao Festival”, literally Ingenuity-Begging Festival

Folklore has it that on this night

the wish of praying to heaven for ingenuity and good marriage can come true
