Pan Yunfeng, a 51-year-old Chinese bamboo weaver, has amazed netizens at home and abroad after short videos of him making bamboo products went viral on social media platforms.

By slicing and weaving, the thick bamboo has turned into various delicate artworks such as pot brushes, baskets, umbrellas, and even cradles as if by magic.

Hailing from Lin'an district, Hangzhou, East China's Zhejiang Province, Pan learned to be a bamboo weaver at 14. As the demand for it declined due to mechanization, he was forced to quit after five years and left his hometown for different jobs, like as an oil worker, cook and welder.

In 2019, he returned to his hometown. After seeing a video of a bamboo weaver that received thousands of likes, he decided to take it up again.

His videos soon gained in popularity. With over 4.8 million followers on Douyin and 3 million on Kuaishou, two major short video apps in China, Pan has become a genuine influencer for netizens by promoting the traditional art simply by using his hands.

In 2008, China listed bamboo weaving art, with a history that stretches back about 2,000 years, as a national intangible cultural heritage.

"Bamboo weaving has become an integral part of my life. I will do my best to preserve and pass on the craft," Pan said.
