Dongjiang River water is the lifeblood of Hong Kong. For nine months of 1962, the city suffered no rainfall, its worst drought since records began in 1884. China's central government responded in February 1964 by launching the Dongjiang-Shenzhen Water Supply Project. More than 10,000 workers were deployed to link the river with the city and they completed construction on March 1, 1965.
