A chiropractor who provides sports medicine care for the national team in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics has attracted a lot of attention online.

The chiropractor, Li Peng, who got his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in the US, chose to come back to China for sports chiropractic study and practice nine years ago. He provided chiropractic care for more than 150 national athletes.

The athletes competed in women's volleyball, women's basketball, women's hockey, swimming, diving, tennis, gymnastics, table tennis, badminton, skateboard, three-on-three basketball, golf, beach volleyball, trampoline, canoe-and-kayak and track-and-field.

Sports chiropractic, as an extension of chiropractic medicine, is more specialized in assessing and treating sports-related and neuromusculoskeletal injuries. Li entered the Olympic Games Preparation Office of the Chinese Olympic Committee in 2018 and started his career in providing medical care for the national team.

On July 18, Li headed for Tokyo as a member of the Team China Sports Medicine Group in the summer Olympics. He joined other doctors for acupuncture and physical therapy. Li said the work was very busy, especially in the afternoon and evening when athletes came for treatment and relaxation at the same time.

"But seeing them perform well during the competition, I feel proud," he said.

Currently, Li is preparing for medical work in the coming Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Li was born to a farmer's family in Chongqing's Hechuan district in 1985. At age 18, he was enrolled in the English department in Sichuan University of Science and Engineering. Li was introduced to chiropractic therapy when he was chosen to work as an English translator by the university, which had joint medical programs with Life University in the US.

Chiropractic, focused on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromusculoskeletal system and mainly around the spine, is the third largest healthcare profession in US and is pursued as a separate college degree. Li censure is required to practice.

Li developed a keen interest in the subject while doing translation work. By chance in 2007, after taking prerequisite courses, he and two other Chinese students were recruited in a special Doctor of Chiropractic program at Life University, led by Dr. John Downes, an expert in sports chiropractic in the US.

Being new to the world of chiropractic, Li said he had a big headache in biology class because of the huge amount of terminologies that he had never heard of before. "I remember that I only got like 30 something out of 100 at the first lab quiz," said Li.

With patience in study as well as getting used to the environment, he got an A in biology and earned the Doctor of Chiropractic degree five years later.

"I'm just fulfilling my commitment." With a will to devote himself to the study and practice in sports chiropractic in China, sports lover Li came back from the US in 2012 and worked in a joint project between Tsinghua University and Life University for six years. In the meantime, he served as a postdoctoral fellow at Tsinghua for two years.
