Some 300 youths from 23 African countries and 10 Chinese universities participated in a China-Africa Youth Summer Camp from August 20-23 sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), which aims to promote international friendship.
During the 4-day summer camp in Beijing, they completed the cultural research, learned more about Chinese culture.
Campers were mostly from local Confucius institutes in Africa, where they took lessons on Chinese language and culture.
At present, about 5,000 students have registered at the Confucius Institute of the University of Rwanda, for example.
There are a total of 14 Confucius Institute teaching sites in Rwanda, mainly at universities, secondary schools, Chinese-funded enterprises and other institutions.
Meanwhile, China has helped Nigeria with infrastructure construction, including the Abuja – Kaduna railway which was the first standardized railway system in the country. Data shows that some 16,738 locals were employed and nearly 150,000 jobs were created during the construction of the railway.
Yu Tianqi, deputy Party secretary of the Hanban, said the Confucius institutes have made positive contributions to promoting educational and cultural exchange and cooperation between China and Africa.
Yu hoped that the Chinese-African Youth Summer Camp would enhance mutual understanding and communication, and that participants would become ambassadors for China-Africa friendship.
