Wu Yili (R) performs in Everlasting Classics [Xinhua]

Wu Yili, a first generation Chinese pianist, attended the the cultural program Everlasting Classics of China Central Television (CCTV) program and performed Butterfly Lovers with violinist Lyv Siqing. Their performance received a standing ovation from the audience whose eyes were filled with tears.
Prior to this, Wu performed Butterfly Lovers in Singapore at a public activity center and the video clip of the performance moved many people to tears.
Although in her late 80s, Wu was still full of vitality on stage and her performance retold the most touching love story in China.
After Wu came to Beijing, she insisted on practicing Butterfly Lovers in the piano room every day, despite having played it for 59 years. It was thus no wonder she brought such a moving and immaculate performance to the audience.
Wu also played the I Love You, China while the program's host Sa Beining sang the song. Their passionate performance led to rousing applause.
Wu said, "Although I have been abroad for many years, my roots are in China."
The piano and music have been the main themes of Wu's life from the beginning. When asked about the meaning of the piano to her, she became excited and tearfully said, "It is my life!"
In addition to her daily practice of the piano, Wu also gives piano lessons. Among her students, many have obtained a Grade-8 diploma of the Royal Academy of Music, UK, amongst other achievements.
Wu also advocated learning piano among the elderly. "Who says old people can't learn the piano? It's never too late to begin." The oldest of her students is 90.
Zeng Baoyi, the hostess, couldn't help crying when she embraced Wu on the stage. "She uses her story to tell us that you may not be able to choose your origin or what kind of hardships you will suffer in life, but you can always choose to grow old with elegance," said Zeng.
