From 1937 to 1948 the communist government was based there and Yan'an attracted thousands upon thousands of patriotic youth from across the nation. They studied and lived in caves, ate and wore what they grew by themselves and they did all they could to fight against the Japanese invaders, finally winning victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.
